Hiker's Demise on Goechala Trek
A 45-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh has tragically passed away while trekking on the renowned Goechala route in Sikkim, as reported by local authorities. The deceased has been identified as Suraj Kumar Tiwari, who embarked on an eight-day trekking expedition in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Khangchendzonga National Park with two friends.
According to a police official, Tiwari began his ascent on Thursday. However, around 9 AM, near the Kokchurong campsite, he suddenly experienced health complications, exhibiting symptoms akin to a stroke. Fellow trekkers and guides promptly administered first aid.
Despite the efforts of local residents and other trekkers to transport him towards Yuksom, Tiwari succumbed to his condition at approximately 8 PM on Thursday, at an altitude of 12,100 feet near Phedang. His body was subsequently taken to the Gyalsing District Hospital on Friday.
Following a post-mortem and necessary legal procedures, his remains were handed over to his family on Saturday. Tiwari is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. This incident marks the third fatality on the Goechala route in 2025.
Tourism stakeholders in Yuksom have urged the administration to enhance medical facilities and emergency rescue operations, particularly along the Dzongri-Goechala corridor.
