MANDI: A tragic incident involving a 20-year-old BTech student at Jawahar Navodaya Government Engineering College (JNGEC) in Sundernagar, Himachal Pradesh, has taken a shocking turn. The student, identified as Arpit, was found dead in his hostel room two days ago, leading to the arrest of a female classmate on charges of blackmail and mental harassment.

Arpit, a fourth-semester Computer Science major, was discovered hanging in his room. A suicide note found in his possession has become crucial evidence, in which he reportedly accused a first-year student named Lavanya of blackmailing him and pressuring him into a physical relationship.

Following the details outlined in the suicide note and a formal complaint lodged by Arpit's mother, police apprehended Lavanya on Sunday (June 1, 2025). She has since been presented in court and is currently in police custody for two days. Authorities have also gathered CCTV footage from the hostel and forensic evidence from the scene.

Mother's Allegations Against College

Victim’s mother accuses college of negligence

Seema Kumari, Arpit's mother, who resides in Lower Kara village in Hamirpur district, has accused the college of negligence. In her statement to the police, she claimed that her son had been suffering from emotional distress for several weeks. She stated that Arpit confided in her about Lavanya's blackmail and the mental anguish he experienced, which forced him into uncomfortable situations.

Seema further alleged that when she tried to reach out to Lavanya's family, the girl intentionally avoided communication and disconnected calls. Additionally, she criticized the college management for their lack of support during Arpit's recent illness with chickenpox, claiming that instead of providing medical assistance, they asked him to vacate the hostel. Consequently, Arpit stayed with Lavanya at a government guest house in Sundernagar from May 4 to May 8, which is now under scrutiny.

Mother's Grief and Accusations

Didn’t have suicidal tendencies, says grieving mother

In her grief, Seema expressed disbelief, stating, “My son was strong-willed. He couldn’t have taken such a step unless he was pushed to the edge. The emotional trauma and blackmail he endured left him with no choice.” She has also placed responsibility on the college authorities for their lack of concern regarding her son’s physical and mental health.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bharat Bhushan confirmed the arrest of the accused student, stating, “The matter is sensitive. Based on the suicide note and the mother’s statement, we have taken the accused into custody. The investigation is ongoing, and we are analyzing digital, forensic, and testimonial evidence.”
