Tragic Death of Auto Driver Sparks NHRC Inquiry in Hyderabad

NHRC Takes Action Following Allegations of Police Brutality

Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reached out to the Director General of Police (DGP) in Telangana, requesting a comprehensive report regarding the death of an autorickshaw driver, who reportedly succumbed to injuries inflicted by police in Hyderabad.

The NHRC acted on its own accord after a media report surfaced, detailing that a 35-year-old autorickshaw driver passed away on May 13, 2025, allegedly following severe physical abuse by officers at the Rajendranagar Police Station.

The Commission noted that if the allegations in the media report are accurate, they indicate a grave infringement of the victim's human rights. Consequently, a notice has been dispatched to the DGP of Telangana, demanding a thorough investigation within a two-week timeframe.

As per the media report published on May 14, 2025, the victim was experiencing marital issues, prompting his wife to take him to the police station for assistance. After a counseling session, he was reportedly taken to a separate room where he was brutally beaten with rubber belts. Upon exiting the police station an hour later, he began to vomit and subsequently collapsed. Medical personnel later pronounced him dead at the hospital, according to the NHRC.

The deceased, identified as Mohd Irfan, was an auto driver residing in Dargah Kalich Khan, Kismatpur, originally from Mysuru, Karnataka.

A police spokesperson indicated that Irfan, a father of three, was allegedly involved with another married woman, which led to ongoing disputes with his wife, Nishad Begum.

On May 13, Nishad Begum and her family visited the other woman's residence for counseling. Following a confrontation, both Irfan and the woman were taken to the police station that night by their relatives. The police reported that they provided counseling to both parties and advised against further contact.

According to police, Irfan collapsed and lost consciousness while exiting the police station. He was promptly transported to Osmania General Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

Irfan's brother, Mohd Sadiq, alleged that his brother died as a result of police violence. He recounted that upon hearing Irfan's cries, they attempted to enter the building but were prevented by the police. After leaving the station, Irfan reportedly began to vomit, complained of chest pain, and collapsed.

A case has been registered regarding the suspicious circumstances surrounding his death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
