Lumding, Oct 14: Authorities have initiated a police inquiry at Lumding Police Station after the untimely death of a 17-year-old girl, whose family claims she suffered abuse and may have taken her own life.
The deceased, Saptami Debnath, was discovered lifeless at her home in Itabhata Chariali, Lumding, late Tuesday evening.
Her family's allegations have yet to be substantiated, and the exact cause of her death remains undetermined.
Saptami's father reported that she was involved with Rohit Das, a local resident from Hari Om Tilla.
He accused Rohit of having physically harmed her shortly before her death, leading to a decline in her eating habits. “From what I understand, they were in a relationship. We learned that the boy had assaulted my daughter days ago. Since then, she had not been eating well and had confided in her mother about thoughts of ending her life,” he stated.
Additionally, he claimed that Saptami had recently gone to Rohit’s home, where a confrontation occurred, resulting in both Rohit and his mother allegedly attacking her.
“We had even talked about their future marriage when they were older. We attempted to provide her with support, but she was clearly troubled. She was just 17. We demand a thorough investigation and justice for my daughter’s death,” he expressed.
The case has gained further attention due to a supposed Instagram post attributed to Saptami.
In this post, she reportedly accused Rohit of physical violence, emotional distress, and humiliation throughout their relationship, indicating he would be responsible for any harm that befell her.

A family member also claimed that Saptami had confronted Rohit in front of his mother during her last visit, alleging that the couple frequently argued.
Family members mentioned that they had previously filed a complaint against Rohit and his mother at Lumding Police Station.
Reports suggest that Rohit has gone into hiding following the incident, although his current location and the progress of the police investigation remain unverified.
