Guwahati, May 1: The tragic incident involving a cruise boat at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh, has resulted in nine fatalities, as rescue operations continue to locate the remaining missing passengers under difficult conditions.
Rescue Efforts
Officials reported that five additional bodies were recovered early Friday, following the four found the previous day. Madhya Pradesh's Tourism Minister, Dharmendra Bhav Singh Lodhi, confirmed that 22 individuals have been rescued, while efforts persist to find those still unaccounted for.
Details of the Incident
The unfortunate cruise, which had 29 passengers and two crew members aboard, capsized on Thursday evening due to a sudden storm affecting the Bargi Dam reservoir, which is situated on the Narmada River. Eyewitness accounts indicate that strong winds caused the water to become turbulent, leading to panic among passengers who urged the crew to return to safety. Unfortunately, the crew did not respond promptly, resulting in the vessel drifting and ultimately capsizing.
Ongoing Search Operations
Rescue operations, involving personnel from the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), continued throughout the night. Authorities are also utilizing hydraulic cranes to recover the submerged boat from the reservoir as search efforts intensify.
Emotional Discoveries
In a heartbreaking turn of events, divers from a paramilitary unit found a woman’s body still holding her child inside the sunken vessel, a scene that has deeply affected even the most experienced rescuers.
Challenges Faced by Divers
Divers from an Agra-based team described the operation as extremely perilous, with navigation through the wreckage being particularly challenging due to limited space, sharp iron rods, and collapsed structures. In some cases, divers had to use hammers to create small openings to access trapped areas of the boat.
“Visibility inside the wreck was very poor, and broken structures frequently hindered movement. At one point, a diver became trapped and required rescue,” a team member recounted, emphasizing the dangers involved in the mission.
Safety Concerns
The internal structure of the boat had reportedly collapsed on both sides, creating dangerously narrow pathways filled with debris and metal grilles, complicating rescue efforts further. Despite these challenges, teams have successfully recovered five bodies, including one child and four adults.
Meanwhile, there are growing concerns regarding safety protocols on board, particularly the availability and use of life jackets. A survivor raised alarms about insufficient safety measures. Minister Lodhi has promised a comprehensive investigation into the incident, including any potential safety compliance failures.
Community Response
Local residents played a vital role in the immediate aftermath of the accident, rescuing some passengers using ropes, particularly those who were wearing life jackets.
