Tragic Cruise Boat Accident in Madhya Pradesh Claims 13 Lives
Death Toll Rises in Jabalpur Boat Incident
The number of fatalities from the cruise boat accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh, has tragically increased to 13. On Sunday morning, the bodies of a five-year-old boy and his uncle were recovered from the water. This incident occurred due to a severe storm that hit on Thursday evening, causing the boat, which was carrying over 40 passengers, to capsize.
Details of the Rescue Operation
Following the accident, a significant rescue operation was launched involving the Army, NDRF, and SDRF teams. With the recovery of the bodies of Mayuram (5) and his uncle Kamaraj on Sunday, the total number of bodies retrieved has reached 13. CCTV footage indicated that there were 43 individuals on board, with 28 successfully rescued. The police have sent all the bodies for post-mortem examinations.
Government Orders Investigation
Dharamendra Singh Lodhi, the tourism minister of Madhya Pradesh, stated that the boat was a 2006 model designed to be unsinkable. The government claims that the accident was caused by the sudden onset of strong winds and waves. However, in light of the seriousness of the incident, a comprehensive investigation has been initiated, leading to the suspension of three crew members. The investigation team is expected to submit its report within a month.
Eyewitnesses Accuse Negligence
An eyewitness, Sangeeta Kori, who survived the accident, reported that safety measures on the cruise were severely lacking. She alleged that passengers were not provided with life jackets beforehand. It was only when water began to fill the boat that crew members started distributing jackets, leading to chaos. Many believe that adherence to safety protocols could have saved numerous lives.
