Tragic Crash of Medical Aircraft Claims Four Lives in New Mexico
Fatal Incident Involving Medical Aircraft
A small medical plane tragically crashed near Ruidoso on Thursday morning, resulting in the deaths of all four individuals on board, as reported by officials. The aircraft went down in the Captain Mountain region shortly after departing from Roswell Air Center, en route to Sierra Blanca Regional Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and local authorities.
Lincoln County Manager Jason Burns stated that the cause of the crash is still under investigation. Additionally, a minor fire associated with the incident erupted in the vicinity, affecting an area of less than five acres. Local emergency services and the US Forest Service were quick to respond to manage the fire.
During a press briefing, Burns expressed condolences, stating, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families, loved ones, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident.” The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed.
The aircraft was operated by Trans Aero MedEvac, whose representative confirmed ownership of the plane but refrained from providing further comments, indicating that a formal statement would be forthcoming.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board have initiated an investigation into the crash. This incident occurred under perilous weather conditions in southern New Mexico, where officials had issued a red flag warning for the Ruidoso area due to hot, dry weather, low humidity, and wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph.
Ruidoso, located in south-central New Mexico, is surrounded by dense forested areas near the Sierra Blanca mountain range. This crash adds to a concerning trend of recent medical aircraft accidents in the United States, including a January 2025 incident where a medical jet crashed in a Philadelphia neighborhood, resulting in eight fatalities, and another incident involving a Mexican Navy medical plane that went down off the Texas coast last year.
