Kolkata, Oct 5: A tragic car accident in the hills of north Bengal's Kurseong resulted in one fatality and left five others injured, as reported by local authorities on Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday night along the Kargil Dhara road in Kurseong.
Reports indicate that a group of six friends was traveling from Kurseong to Siliguri in a vehicle when, around 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., heavy rainfall in the Kargil Dhara region, located 10 kilometers above Rohini, caused the car to lose control and plunge into a ditch approximately 200 feet deep.
Local residents promptly initiated rescue efforts. Upon being alerted, a disaster management team and police arrived at the scene to assist. The victims were transported to a nearby hospital, where one individual was pronounced dead, while the others are receiving medical care.
According to police reports, all six individuals hail from Siliguri. An officer from the Darjeeling District Police stated, "The vehicle lost control in Kargildara and fell into a ditch about two hundred feet below. Locals managed to rescue two individuals, but the rain and darkness complicated the rescue efforts, leaving three trapped in the vehicle."
Subsequently, the police and disaster management personnel successfully rescued the remaining three individuals. Among the five injured, two are currently being treated at a primary hospital in Kurseong, while the other three have been transferred to a hospital in Siliguri. The deceased's body has been sent for an autopsy.
It is important to note that the hills of north Bengal have been experiencing continuous rainfall in recent days due to the monsoon's withdrawal from the region. Authorities have advised drivers to exercise caution while navigating hilly areas, particularly during the rainy season and at night.
