Greater Noida, Sep 24: A devastating fire erupted in a double-decker bus in Greater Noida, resulting in the tragic deaths of nine individuals, including one woman, while several others sustained serious injuries. Authorities have detained the bus driver and conductor, initiating legal proceedings under applicable laws.
Initial investigations indicate that the blaze may have started due to a spark or explosion in the bus's air conditioning system, which ignited the lubricating oil in the engine, leading to a rapid spread of flames.
The bus, which was en route from Kashmiri Gate in New Delhi to Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh, caught fire unexpectedly near the 33 km mark on the Yamuna Expressway, within the jurisdiction of Jewar Police Station. This incident caused panic among passengers, many of whom attempted to escape by jumping through the windows.
The Jewar Police are currently working to identify the victims.
"A case has been filed concerning the incident, and both the driver and conductor are in custody. Further legal actions are in progress," officials stated.
Reports suggest that over 30 passengers were aboard the bus at the time of the fire. Tragically, nine passengers, including a woman, were trapped inside and perished in the flames.
Upon notification of the incident, senior police officials, along with local law enforcement, a rescue team, and a fire brigade stationed at Jewar Toll Plaza, promptly responded. Four additional fire engines and a fire service unit were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire completely.
Officials confirmed that more than 20 passengers were successfully evacuated.
"Despite the thick smoke, the police and fire service teams made significant efforts to access the bus; unfortunately, they found nine individuals who had succumbed to burns or suffocation inside," rescue workers reported.
This incident has reignited concerns regarding the safety measures and protocols in place for buses, especially those operating on long-distance routes.
A preliminary report noted that the bus was carrying a considerable amount of luggage, including items loaded on the roof, which has raised further questions following the fire.
Similar incidents involving buses have occurred in the past, highlighting ongoing concerns about passenger safety and the necessity for improved emergency protocols in such vehicles.
