Chennai, July 13: A devastating accident occurred early Monday morning near Kottampatti in the Madurai district, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to 42 others, including numerous children, after a private omni bus collided head-on with a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus, according to police reports.

The incident took place on the four-lane national highway close to Vandinagar when the private bus, en route from Chennai to Marthandam, reportedly lost control, crossed the central median, and crashed into the TNSTC bus traveling in the opposite direction. The force of the impact caused significant damage to both vehicles.

Following the collision, the private bus veered off the highway and collided with a roadside passenger shelter, resulting in severe damage and trapping several passengers inside.

The TNSTC bus overturned due to the collision's intensity, leaving its passengers injured and stranded.

Emergency responders, including police, fire services, and local residents, quickly arrived at the scene to conduct a rescue operation.

Rescue teams utilized specialized tools to free passengers trapped in the wreckage before transporting the injured to nearby ambulances.

Authorities confirmed that five individuals—four men and one woman—died at the scene due to their injuries, although their identities have not yet been officially released.

Forty-two others, including children, suffered various injuries and were taken to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for treatment. Hospital officials reported that some of the injured remain in critical condition and are under close medical supervision.

Initial investigations suggest that the driver of the private bus may have lost control just before the crash. However, police stated that a thorough investigation, including vehicle examinations and witness statements, is necessary to determine the precise cause of the accident.

The incident caused panic among local motorists and residents, leading to significant traffic disruptions on the busy highway for several hours.

Authorities redirected traffic through alternate routes while cranes were deployed to remove the damaged buses and clear the roadway.

The Kottampatti police have filed a case and initiated a detailed investigation into the tragic accident, examining factors such as speeding, driver fatigue, or mechanical failure that may have contributed to the incident.
