Fatal Incident Involving BEST Bus
Mumbai, Dec 30: The tragic bus accident involving a BEST bus in Mumbai has resulted in four confirmed fatalities, as reported by officials on Tuesday.
In addition, nine individuals sustained injuries but are currently reported to be in stable condition, according to a statement from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The incident occurred late Monday night when the bus lost control and collided with pedestrians on the roadside. Officials indicated that the vehicle struck between 10 and 12 people before it finally stopped.
The accident transpired as the driver attempted to reverse the bus at the end of its route.
BEST operates the largest public bus fleet in India.
Emergency services, including police and fire department personnel, quickly arrived at the scene to assist.
The injured victims were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The driver has been identified as Santosh Ramesh Sawant, aged 52, while the bus conductor is Bhagwan Bhau Ghare, 47.
The deceased have been named as Pranita Sandip Rasam (35), Varsha Sawant (25), Mansi Meghshyam Gurav (49), and Prashant Shinde (53).
Following the accident, a significant police presence was established at the location to control the situation and manage traffic.
The incident caused considerable alarm among local residents, who gathered at the scene shortly after it occurred.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus seemed to be speeding just before it veered off course and hit pedestrians. Police are currently verifying these accounts as part of their investigation.
Authorities have launched an inquiry to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the possibility of mechanical failure or other contributing factors.
