Devastating Collision in Markapuram

Guwahati, March 26: A catastrophic road accident in Andhra Pradesh's Markapuram district resulted in the deaths of at least 14 individuals, with many others sustaining injuries after a private bus collided with a tipper truck and subsequently caught fire early Thursday morning.

The incident took place around 6:30 a.m. near Rayavaram, involving a Harikrishna Travels bus that was transporting approximately 35 passengers. The bus crashed into a tipper truck located near a stone quarry, leading to a rapid and intense fire that engulfed both vehicles. Tragically, several passengers were trapped inside and perished, while a few managed to escape.

Emergency response teams, including police and firefighters, quickly arrived at the scene, deploying multiple fire engines to extinguish the blaze. The injured were transported to local hospitals, with some in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could increase.

Initial investigations indicate that the bus may have swerved into oncoming traffic, potentially due to a steering failure, although officials are still determining the precise cause of the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the victims and announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
