Tragic Bus Accident Claims Lives in Assam's Goalpara District
Fatal Collision in Goalpara
Goalpara, Feb 4: A tragic accident occurred in Assam's Goalpara district, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others when a truck collided with a stationary wedding bus at Budhipara, near Agia Police Station.
The incident took place on National Highway 17 during the early hours of Wednesday. The victims have been identified as Naresh Das and Rabi Das.
Reports indicate that Naresh Das was the elder sibling of the groom, Bishnu Das.
The wedding party had traveled from Uttar Raypur in the Golokganj area of Dhubri district to Budhipara for the marriage ceremony.
Following the collision, local police arrived promptly to assist and transported the injured to a nearby medical facility for care.
One passenger recounted that a dispute had erupted between the families of the bride and groom, leading to the wedding bus being halted on the highway.
“The bride’s family filed a complaint against the groom’s side, and some individuals, including the bride and groom, went to the police station to address the issue. During this time, a truck approached from behind and crashed into the bus, resulting in two fatalities,” the passenger explained. The accident occurred as the wedding party was returning home after the ceremony.
Road safety remains a significant issue in Assam, despite recent statistics indicating a decrease in accidents.
Between 2019 and 2023, Assam recorded the highest number of road accidents among northeastern states, with 36,800 incidents reported, according to a report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways released in September 2025.
However, the human toll remains alarming. Data from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in October 2025 revealed that Assam experienced 4,072 fatalities due to traffic-related incidents in 2023, encompassing road accidents as well as railway mishaps.
These statistics underscore the magnitude of the challenge, even as officials note signs of improvement in recent years.
