Building Collapse in Bhiwandi: A Call for Urgent Action

Following the tragic collapse of a dilapidated building in Bhiwandi that resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the need for authorities to evacuate residents from 'dangerous' structures. He stated that force may be necessary to ensure safety during evacuations.

During a press briefing, Fadnavis revealed that the building had been classified as a C1 category structure, indicating it was unsafe for habitation. He expressed his sorrow over the incident, noting, “It is very unfortunate.”

The local municipal commissioner informed him that approximately 25 residents had already been evacuated prior to the collapse, yet the contractor continued repair work, leading to this disaster.

Fadnavis extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and announced that the state government would provide financial assistance to them.

He instructed the municipal commissioner to initiate legal action against the contractor. Explaining the classification, the Chief Minister stated that C1 category buildings are deemed hazardous and unfit for living. He stressed, “Life is precious.”

“Saving lives is equally important. Residents of C1 category buildings must be evacuated through persuasion and, if necessary, with some force. However, there are certain restrictions based on court orders. Still, I believe saving lives is paramount,” he added.

Officials reported that the four-story Kohinoor building's collapse in Bhiwandi led to at least nine fatalities, with two to three individuals still believed to be trapped under the debris. The Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation had declared the building 'dangerous' back in September 2020 and issued an evacuation notice on June 5 of this year, subsequently cutting off electricity and water supply.
