Building Collapse in Bhivandi: Casualties and Rescue Efforts

In Bhivandi, Maharashtra, a four-story building collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals, with fears that six to seven more may be trapped under the debris. Officials reported that a section of the Kohinoor Building, located in the Balaji Nagar area, fell around 11:30 PM on Thursday night.

Resident Deputy Collector Sandeep Mane confirmed, "At least seven fatalities have been recorded. Identification of all but one victim is still pending. The bodies have been sent to a government hospital for post-mortem examinations."

He also mentioned that rescue operations are ongoing to locate the six to seven individuals believed to be trapped. One minor was rescued in an injured state and transported to a nearby hospital.

The building comprised 48 rooms, with 12 rooms on each floor, and had previously been declared dangerous by local authorities. The incident occurred while repair work was underway in the premises.

An official noted that around 9 PM on Thursday, residents heard loud cracking noises coming from the building. Sensing danger, locals quickly assisted several families in evacuating to safer locations. However, as some residents were exiting, the 'B' wing of the building suddenly collapsed.

A comprehensive rescue operation is being conducted on-site by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Thane Disaster Response Force, and the local fire department. The rescue efforts include a dog squad, four fire engines, two ambulances, and heavy machinery for debris removal.
