Incident Overview

In a heartbreaking incident in Manipur's Bishnupur district, two young children lost their lives due to an attack attributed to suspected Kuki militants. The attack occurred on Tuesday, resulting in injuries to their mother, as reported by local sources.

The victims, aged five months and five years, were asleep in their home in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai when a bomb was hurled by the assailants around 1 am, leading to the tragic explosion.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, representing the Kuki community, has denied any involvement of its members in this incident. They emphasized that any incidents affecting the Meitei community should not be hastily linked to the Kuki-Zo people without thorough investigation.

The forum further stated that the buffer zones separating Kuki-Zo and Meitei regions are heavily monitored by security forces, making it nearly impossible for individuals from the Kuki-Zo community to infiltrate and execute such attacks undetected.

They also pointed out that the closest Kuki village to the site of the attack is currently abandoned and under the control of central security forces, which undermines the allegations against the Kuki community.

According to reports, the area has been a hotspot for tensions since ethnic clashes erupted between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities in May 2023, resulting in over 260 fatalities and displacing more than 59,000 individuals.

State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam condemned the violence on social media, asserting that such acts of brutality will not be tolerated. He assured that the investigation is ongoing and that efforts are being made to identify and prosecute those responsible for this heinous act.
