North Lakhimpur, Oct 4: A tragic incident occurred in Assam's Lakhimpur district on Sunday, where three individuals lost their lives after their small boat capsized in the Mer Beel wetland.

According to police reports, the victims included an 11-year-old boy, his uncle, and a neighbor who drowned while attempting to cross the wetland.

The deceased have been identified as Padma Dutta, aged 45, his nephew Mridushmin Dutta, 11, and Ajeet Dutta, 22, all hailing from Deoliya village under the jurisdiction of Ghilamora police station.

The incident took place around 9 am as they were crossing the wetland to reach Kathoni Mer Beel for grazing their cattle, as per local accounts.

Authorities stated that the boat capsized in the middle of the water, leading to the drowning of all three individuals. The high-water levels in the wetland were cited as a contributing factor.

Villagers quickly initiated a rescue operation, managing to recover the bodies from the water.

The bodies were later transported by police to North Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem procedures.

Residents suspect that the boat may have gotten caught in submerged fishing nets, which could have led to the capsizing, although this claim has not been verified independently.

The tragedy has brought a deep sense of sorrow to Deoliya village and its neighboring areas.
