Hamirpur, May 7: A devastating boat accident occurred in the Yamuna River in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving six others unaccounted for. The boat, which was transporting nine passengers from Ghatampur, sank on Wednesday, with one person successfully rescued, according to officials.

The incident transpired at Kutupur Patia, under the jurisdiction of the Kurara police station, where the boat submerged while crossing the river.

Authorities have confirmed the recovery of the body of Brajrani, a woman, and the remains of 14-year-old Archana have also been found. Search operations for the remaining missing individuals are currently ongoing.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been actively engaged in rescue efforts since last night, although heavy rainfall has complicated their operations.

Among those still missing are four children, aged between 5 and 15 years. Divers from SDRF, NDRF, and Flood PAC are conducting thorough searches in the vicinity.

The District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police are closely overseeing the rescue and relief efforts.

District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal reported that local villagers and police rushed to the scene immediately after the incident was reported.

“A boat carrying nine individuals from Ghatampur sank in the Yamuna River. Three were rescued promptly, while six remain unaccounted for. Rescue teams, including SDRF, NDRF, and flood relief units, have been dispatched. SDRF teams are already on-site, with others en route. The rescue operation is ongoing,” Goyal stated.

He added that the passengers were returning from a routine trip that had experienced delays.

“The surviving boatman indicated that the boat did not capsize but sank on its own. Those who could swim managed to escape, while efforts continue to locate the six missing individuals. Rescue operations will persist throughout the night,” he noted.

BJP MLA Manoj Prajapati mentioned that among the missing are five children and one woman.

“The administration is fully mobilized. Three SDRF teams have been deployed. The government will follow protocol, and a comprehensive report will be submitted to the Chief Minister,” Prajapati remarked.

DIG Banda Division Rajesh Yash confirmed, “Nine individuals were aboard the boat. Three swam to safety, while six, including one woman and five children aged between 5 and 15 years, are still missing. SDRF and flood relief teams, along with district administration and police officials, are present at the scene.”
