Gunmen Target Polio Team in North Waziristan

Peshawar: A tragic incident unfolded in northwest Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when gunmen attacked a polio vaccination team, resulting in the death of a police officer assigned to protect them, as reported by local authorities on Tuesday.

The shooting took place on Monday in the Mirali tehsil of North Waziristan district, which shares a border with Afghanistan. Following the assault, the attackers managed to escape the scene.

Law enforcement quickly arrived at the location, securing the area and initiating a search operation to locate the assailants.

Over the past decade, polio vaccination teams and their security personnel in Pakistan have been subjected to numerous attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the adjacent tribal regions.

In spite of these ongoing threats, the government has persisted with nationwide polio vaccination campaigns, implementing stringent security measures.

Pakistan remains one of the last two nations globally, alongside Afghanistan, where polio is still endemic.

Global initiatives to eliminate the virus have faced significant hurdles, including security challenges, public hesitancy towards vaccines, and the spread of misinformation.
