Tragic Assault in Silchar Leads to Protests Following Death

Incident Overview

On March 9, a tragic incident unfolded in Silchar, where three individuals were taken into custody after a man lost his life due to an alleged attack by assailants during a dispute in the Rangpur locality on Holi. The victim has been identified as Sajan Deb.

According to Additional SP (Crime) Rajat Pal, the police acted on a complaint lodged by the victim's family, leading to the detention of the suspects while an investigation is currently in progress.

Deb reportedly suffered severe head injuries during the altercation and was immediately transported to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where he was placed on ventilator support. Unfortunately, he passed away from his injuries on Saturday.

The news of Deb's death sparked protests in the Rongpur area of Silchar on Sunday.

In response to the incident, local residents expressed their outrage by placing Deb's body on the Silchar–Imphal National Highway at Rongpur, near the Barak river bridge.

This demonstration led to a blockade of the highway, with protesters demanding stringent action against those responsible for the assault.

The blockade resulted in significant traffic disruptions, necessitating the deployment of a substantial police presence to the scene.

Fortunately, Additional SP reported that the situation was eventually stabilized following negotiations with the victim's family and the demonstrators.
