Nine Fatalities Reported from Ammonia Gas Leak in Tamil Nadu


Chennai/Bhubaneswar: The ammonia gas leak incident at a seafood processing and export facility in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, has resulted in the tragic loss of nine lives, as confirmed by government officials on Tuesday.


According to the health department's report, all the victims were women, with seven hailing from Odisha and two from Assam.


The deceased have been identified as Shibani, Jumani Juang, Geetha Juanga, Purinama Juanga, Champabati Juanga, Parbavathi Juanga, Sita Hasda, and Anjita Soren, while one individual remains unidentified.


This hazardous chemical leak occurred during standard operations on June 21 at the facility located in the Kannigaipair/Manjungaranai region near Periyapalayam.


Out of the 69 individuals hospitalized, 27 are receiving treatment at Vels Hospital, 18 at Venkateswara Hospital, 11 at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, and 13 at Stanley Medical College Hospital. Two patients have already been discharged.


Those affected exhibited severe symptoms of ammonia exposure, including acute breathlessness, coughing, chest pain, and irritation of the eyes and respiratory system.


Authorities are currently investigating the precise cause of this unfortunate incident.


The Health Department has assured that the conditions of hospitalized patients are being closely monitored.


Efforts are underway to assess and monitor the affected area to ensure public safety. The Health Department continues to oversee the situation and provide necessary medical support to all impacted individuals.
