Air India Flight Disaster Overview

Air India has confirmed a devastating incident involving its flight that was en route to London from Ahmedabad. Shortly after takeoff on Thursday, the aircraft crashed, resulting in the loss of 241 lives among the 242 individuals on board. In a statement released late Thursday night, the airline expressed its sorrow, stating, 'We regret to inform that 241 of the 242 people aboard have been confirmed deceased.' The sole survivor is a British national of Indian descent, who is currently receiving medical treatment.


The aircraft, which took off from Ahmedabad Airport, tragically went down just minutes after departure, crashing into a medical college campus.


Casualties Beyond the Flight

The crash not only claimed the lives of those on the plane but also resulted in additional casualties. At least five MBBS students, a PG resident doctor, and the wife of a super-specialist doctor from BJ Medical College lost their lives due to the incident. Furthermore, around 60 medical students sustained injuries as a result of the crash. Air India confirmed the tragic death toll of 241 passengers, with only one survivor.


The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) announced support for those affected by the crash. Dr. Divyansh Singh, the national vice president of FAIMA, mentioned that search operations at the crash site are ongoing, with fears that more individuals may be trapped in the wreckage. He noted, 'The bodies recovered are completely charred.'


Details of the Flight and Passenger Demographics

Air India has verified that its flight AI-171, which departed from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on June 12, 2025, was involved in this tragic accident. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was 12 years old, took off at 1:38 PM. Onboard were 230 passengers and 12 crew members, totaling 242 individuals. Among the passengers were 169 Indian citizens, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian citizen.
