A tragic incident occurred in Khed taluka, Pune district, Maharashtra, where a pickup van transporting women devotees to the Kundeshwar Shiva temple fell into a 30-foot-deep ditch on Ghat Marg. This unfortunate event resulted in the immediate deaths of seven women, while approximately 25 to 30 others suffered injuries.


Details of the Incident

Reports indicate that the women, hailing from Papalwadi village, were en route to Kundeshwar for a religious visit when the vehicle lost control at a sharp curve and plunged into the ditch. The van was carrying around 25 to 30 women, along with some children. Rescue operations commenced promptly, and the injured were taken to the nearby Paith Rural Hospital, with some in critical condition.


Official Statements

DCP Shivaji Pawar confirmed the incident, stating, "Seven individuals lost their lives, and many others were injured when a pickup van carrying women and children heading to the Kundeshwar temple fell down a slope of 25-30 feet. The injured are being treated at various hospitals."


Prime Minister's Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, stating, "I am saddened by the loss of lives in the Pune accident. My condolences to the bereaved families. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh will be provided to the families of each deceased, and Rs. 50,000 will be given to the injured."


State Government's Response

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state government would offer financial aid of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the victims. He stated, "We will provide 4 lakh rupees to the families of those who lost their lives. Over 20 individuals were injured and are receiving treatment in various hospitals. I am in touch with the Police Commissioner to ensure their care."
