Fatal Incident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway

A spontaneous decision to witness the sunrise in Lonavala after watching a movie in Mumbai turned into a tragedy for three IIT Bombay students. The accident occurred on Thursday morning as they were returning, resulting in their deaths after colliding with a container truck around 8:35 AM on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The students were found trapped in the wreckage of their car, which was severely damaged. Highway traffic police utilized cutting tools to extricate them and rushed them to MGM Hospital in Kamothe, where they were pronounced dead. The first report of the accident came from a bus driver who witnessed the incident. The students were traveling in a Volkswagen Polo when they attempted to overtake the container truck near the Bhatan tunnel, leading to the collision.


An FIR has been filed, and authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage.


Details of the Accident

The crash was so severe that the car flipped multiple times, ultimately becoming a twisted heap of metal. Based on a complaint from another student, Hitesh Kumar Meena, an FIR has been lodged against an unidentified individual. Police are examining CCTV footage to identify the container truck involved and are investigating whether speeding or driver fatigue contributed to the accident.


Background of the Students

The three students were part of a group of six from IIT Bombay, traveling in a rented Volkswagen Polo. They had spent the night in Lonavala after watching a film at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, intending to enjoy the sunrise. The tragic incident occurred approximately 1.5 kilometers past the Bhatan tunnel as they were heading back to Mumbai.
