Devastating Warehouse Collapse in Kolkata
Kolkata: On Thursday, West Bengal's Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari reported that a tragic incident in the Taratala area resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, with 20 others sustaining injuries due to the collapse of an under-construction warehouse.
During an Assembly session, he declared that the families of the deceased would receive a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each, while those injured would be compensated with Rs 1 lakh each.
Among the injured, one person is in critical condition, and four others are reported to be seriously hurt, according to the Chief Minister.
Adhikari confirmed that five individuals have been detained in relation to the warehouse collapse on Transport Depot Road in western Kolkata, emphasizing that accountability will be enforced.
He also noted that the building plan for the collapsed structure bore the signature of former mayor and minister Firhad Hakim.
Earlier, the Chief Minister mentioned that initial assessments from engineers at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation indicated flaws in the approved building plan for the warehouse.
In response to the incident, he has suspended all ongoing commercial construction projects sanctioned by the previous TMC government until July 31 and has mandated a thorough audit of these projects.
The warehouse's roof collapsed around noon on Wednesday while several workers were present at the site, as reported by a Kolkata Police officer.
