Tragedy Strikes in Kolkata: 200-Year-Old Building Collapses, One Confirmed Dead
Kolkata Building Collapse Claims Life
In a tragic incident early Tuesday morning, a historic building in north Kolkata, estimated to be around 200 years old, collapsed following a night of heavy rainfall, resulting in one fatality. Authorities are concerned that the number of casualties may increase as 19 residents are still believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
The deceased has been identified as Urmila Shaw, who was reportedly about to leave her home when the structure gave way, leading to her immediate death.
Emergency responders from the West Bengal fire services, the state disaster management team, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have arrived at the scene to assist in the rescue efforts for those still trapped.
The building, which has only one access point, had been declared abandoned by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) some time ago, yet 20 individuals continued to reside there.
Rescue operations are being hampered by a narrow lane in front of the building, complicating evacuation efforts.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash that startled the entire neighborhood, prompting locals to rush to the scene where they witnessed the building's collapse after the prolonged rain.
The body of Urmila Shaw was discovered under the debris, and KMC officials were notified to recover her remains. It has been reported that her husband and son are among those still unaccounted for.
Despite the KMC's previous warnings for residents to vacate or renovate the dilapidated three-story building, many chose to remain, leading to this unfortunate event.
