Devastating Plane Crash in Ahmedabad
New Delhi: The Indian sports community is in deep sorrow following a tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, prompting athletes to share their condolences and prayers for the passengers, crew, and their families.
On Thursday afternoon, Air India's Flight AI171, which was en route to London, crashed near Ahmedabad airport. The airline confirmed that the Boeing 787-8 aircraft was carrying a total of 242 individuals, including passengers and crew.
Among those on board, there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese nationals. Air India has established a dedicated hotline at 1800 5691 444 for further assistance.
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, "I am utterly shocked and deeply anguished to learn about the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and their families who are enduring unimaginable pain and loss."
Two-time Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu also shared her grief, saying, "Deeply saddened by the tragic crash of Air India flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London today, June 12, 2025. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of all 242 souls on board. May love surround every grieving heart and strength find those left behind."
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla conveyed his condolences, remarking, "Deeply shocked & heartbroken to learn about the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts are with the passengers, crew & their families as they face this unimaginable tragedy. In times like these, our hearts must come together in compassion for all who are suffering."
Olympic wrestler Bajrang Punia described the incident as a very sad accident, praying for the departed souls. Former allrounder Yusuf Pathan expressed his shock and concern for the safety of all involved.
Irfan Pathan, another former cricketer, shared his sadness over the crash, while Shikhar Dhawan extended his sympathies to the affected families, wishing them strength during this difficult time.
Mohammed Shami, a current Indian pacer, simply stated, "Pray for all the families."
Indian Premier League teams also expressed their condolences. The Gujarat Titans tweeted, "We are deeply saddened by the plane crash in Ahmedabad. We pray for everyone affected and their families."
The Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings also shared their thoughts, emphasizing their prayers for those affected by this tragic event.
