Tom Blundell Excluded from Second Test Against West Indies Due to Injury
Blundell Out for Second Test
New Zealand's wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell will miss the second Test of the three-match series against the West Indies, set to commence at the Basin Reserve on December 10. This decision follows a hamstring injury he sustained while batting on the first day of the initial Test in Christchurch.
Latham Steps Up
In Blundell's absence, Tom Latham took over as captain and handled wicketkeeping duties throughout both innings. Latham excelled, taking four catches during the West Indies' first innings, which contributed to New Zealand's 64-run lead. He also scored an impressive 145 runs off 250 balls in the second innings, marking him as the fifth New Zealander to surpass 6000 Test runs.
West Indies Chase Improbable Target
New Zealand declared their second innings at 466/8, setting a daunting target of 531 runs for the West Indies. The visitors ended day four at 212 for 4, with Shai Hope remaining unbeaten on 116.
Potential Debut for Mitch Hay
With Blundell sidelined, wicketkeeper-batter Mitch Hay is poised to make his Test debut against the West Indies. The 25-year-old boasts an impressive first-class record, having scored 1888 runs in 47 innings at an average of 49.68.
Injury Concerns for New Zealand
New Zealand's injury woes extend beyond Blundell, as their leading bowler Matt Henry and Nathan Smith also faced injuries during the first Test. Henry exited the field after the 35th over of the West Indies' second innings and did not participate in the final session on day four. He was taken to the hospital for calf scans.
Jacob Oram, New Zealand's bowling coach, expressed concern over the injuries, stating they are awaiting scan results for both players. "It's disappointing for them, and I empathize with their situation. We're waiting for the reports to determine our strategy not just for this Test but for the series ahead. It's a matter of waiting and hoping for the best, especially with only one day left before the next match," Oram remarked.
