TMC Takes Action Against Humayun Kabir
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has suspended MLA Humayun Kabir following his controversial comments regarding the construction of a mosque in Murshidabad, West Bengal, reminiscent of the Babri Masjid. The party accused him of attempting to incite communal tensions and suggested that he is being encouraged by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Despite the suspension, Kabir remains firm on his stance regarding the mosque's construction.
In a conversation with the media, Kabir stated, "When I said we will lay the foundation, we will indeed lay it. Everything will be revealed later. On 25 bighas of land, we will establish an Islamic hospital, a rest house, a hotel-restaurant, a helipad, a park, and a medical college. Just wait a little. Don't worry. We will complete these projects in the coming days." He expressed confidence, challenging anyone to stop him in Murshidabad.
Targeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Kabir remarked on her initial electoral success, questioning why he was included in the party if he was not valued. He criticized the financial allocations for religious activities, claiming that while funds are provided for Hindu festivals, Muslim clerics receive allowances, suggesting that the Chief Minister is acting in favor of the RSS.
The Babri Masjid was demolished on December 6, 1992. Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim announced Kabir's suspension, labeling his actions as a severe breach of discipline at a time when the party is striving to maintain peace and communal harmony in the state. Hakim confirmed that the suspension was sanctioned by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in the presence of local leaders Akhruzzaman and Niyamat Sheikh.
