TMC Suspends MLA Humayun Kabir Over Controversial Mosque Remarks

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has suspended MLA Humayun Kabir following his controversial pledge to construct a replica of the Babri Mosque in West Bengal. This decision, made under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, comes after Kabir's announcement to lay the foundation on December 6, the anniversary of the original mosque's demolition. In response to his suspension, Kabir plans to form a new political party and contest in the upcoming assembly elections. His remarks have also provided the BJP with a platform to criticize TMC, alleging involvement in vote bank politics. The political landscape in West Bengal is heating up as parties prepare for the 2026 elections.

TMC Takes Action Against Humayun Kabir

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has officially suspended party legislator Humayun Kabir on Thursday. This decision follows his recent declaration to construct a replica of the Babri Mosque in Murshidabad district, West Bengal. The party, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stated that Kabir had been warned against making such contentious statements. Last month, he announced plans to lay the foundation for the mosque replica on December 6, coinciding with the anniversary of the original mosque's demolition in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. He estimated that the construction would take approximately three months.

Minister and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim confirmed that Kabir's suspension was approved by party president Mamata Banerjee and general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Hakim remarked that the party was taken aback by Kabir's sudden announcement regarding the mosque's construction. He emphasized that they had previously cautioned him against such actions. In accordance with TMC's decision, they have moved forward with the suspension of Humayun Kabir.

Following his suspension from TMC, Kabir announced plans to establish a new political party next month, intending to contest 135 seats in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. As the legislator from the Debra constituency, he stated, "I will resign from TMC tomorrow. If necessary, I will announce my new party on December 22."

Kabir's remarks have provided the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with an opportunity to criticize TMC ahead of the 2026 West Bengal elections. The BJP has accused Banerjee's party of engaging in vote bank politics and has also alleged that TMC supports Bangladeshi infiltrators. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has similarly condemned TMC, asserting that Kabir's comments reflect the party's "ideological instability."
