TMC Rebels Seek Formal Recognition for NCPI Ahead of Monsoon Session

In a significant political move, rebel TMC MP Sudip Bandopadhyay has announced a demand for the formal recognition of the Nationalist Congress Party (India) as the second-largest party in the NDA. This announcement comes ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament, following a multi-party meeting. Bandopadhyay plans to submit a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to support this request. The situation has been further complicated by a temporary walkout from opposition parties during the meeting, protesting the government's invitation to NCPI. The outcome of this political maneuvering remains to be seen as the Speaker's decision on the rebel MPs' status is still pending.

TMC's Call for NCPI Recognition

After a multi-party meeting prior to the Monsoon session of Parliament, Sudip Bandopadhyay, a rebel MP from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), announced on Sunday that their faction is requesting formal recognition for the Nationalist Congress Party (India) (NCPI). He asserted that NCPI is the second-largest party within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Speaking to reporters, Bandopadhyay mentioned that a letter would be submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to advocate for NCPI's recognition.

Opposition's Walkout

Bandopadhyay stated that currently, NCPI ranks as the second-largest party in the NDA, surpassing the parties of Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar. He emphasized the demand for the Election Commission to grant recognition to NCPI. The letter is set to be presented to the Speaker, and Kakoli is responsible for delivering it. This development occurred after opposition parties temporarily walked out of the all-party meeting. Initially, they left in protest against the government's invitation to NCPI but returned shortly after.

Pending Matters with the Speaker

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh remarked that the situation concerning the rebel TMC MPs, who claim to have joined NCPI, is still pending with Speaker Om Birla. Ramesh posted on X that all opposition parties briefly walked out of the meeting in protest against the Modi government's decision to invite NCPI, which serves as a refuge for the 20 'rebel' TMC MPs, with the Speaker's final decision on their cases still awaited.
