TMC MP Sougata Roy Criticizes Party Members Considering NDA Alliance
Concerns Over Party Loyalty
Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy has expressed strong disapproval regarding the trend of party members contemplating joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He labeled such actions as unethical amidst ongoing internal conflicts and recent electoral defeats. Speaking on June 12, Roy voiced his worries about the potential exodus of party members to other political factions following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, emphasizing that this could adversely affect the party's standing.
Criticism of Party Dynamics
Roy stated, "In my view, discussing a shift to another party or joining the NDA so soon is unethical." He dismissed the notion that the party's current challenges are solely the fault of General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, asserting, "I don't believe that is true. While I acknowledge the party is in a difficult position, blaming Abhishek for everything is incorrect." He characterized the recent dissent as opportunistic, noting that critics had previously supported Abhishek Banerjee before May 4.
Maintaining Party Unity
He remarked that those now voicing concerns had praised Abhishek prior to May 4 and had never raised such complaints before. Roy views the potential shift in loyalty as a sign of opportunism. Amidst speculation that around 20 rebel MPs may leave the TMC, he mentioned that he is in contact with members to maintain unity within the party. Referring to a recent conversation with party leader Sayani Ghosh, he said, "I spoke with Sayani four or five days ago, and she expressed her commitment to the party and Mamata Banerjee."
Internal Conflicts Intensify
These statements come at a time when the TMC is facing significant internal disagreements. MP and lawyer Kalyan Banerjee has publicly challenged Abhishek Banerjee's conduct, linking it to allegations of forgery in signatures, and has issued an ultimatum to party leader Mamata Banerjee. Kalyan accused Abhishek of arrogance and disrespect, suggesting that it would be better for one person to handle the situation. He added, "If you think I can't manage this, then take it over, but do not treat me like trash. Let me know within an hour. Today my son informed me that I will not be attending."
