On Wednesday, Kalyan Banerjee, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was suspended for the remainder of the ongoing Monsoon session in the Lok Sabha. This disciplinary action followed an incident where Banerjee allegedly referred to a rebel TMC MP as a thief. Tensions escalated within the Lok Sabha chamber after the proceedings were adjourned amidst opposition protests.

Earlier in the day, Banerjee engaged in a heated exchange with NCPI MPs Mithali Baag, Shatabdi Roy, and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. These three had previously been affiliated with TMC but later defected to the NCPI.

Banerjee, known for his loyalty to TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, was seen arguing with these MPs after the session was suspended. The exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear. Several opposition members intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. When some members inquired about the incident, Banerjee left the Lok Sabha chamber.

Following the altercation, Mithali Baag, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, and other NCPI MPs approached Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to formally raise the issue.

Background of the Conflict

According to sources, the Speaker requested the NCPI MPs to submit a written complaint regarding the incident. This clash occurred amid significant fractures within the Trinamool Congress. After the party's defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, nearly 20 TMC MPs rebelled against the leadership and joined the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).

The rebel MPs have begun sitting separately from TMC members in the Lok Sabha and have publicly declared their support for the ruling NDA government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
