TMC Leaders Discuss Party Identity Amidst Defections

On Tuesday, Sudip Bandopadhyay, a rebel leader from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stated that it is the court that will determine who the 'real TMC' is. He emphasized that if two-thirds of the party's MPs decide to leave, it is constitutionally valid. He further clarified that such a situation would not be considered a betrayal. A group of 20 dissenting TMC MPs has expressed their intention to merge with the National Citizens Party of India (NCPI) and support the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the center. They met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to request recognition of their separate identity from the TMC.

Bandopadhyay told reporters that there are a total of 20 Lok Sabha MPs, and if two-thirds are separating, it cannot be deemed a betrayal. The Constitution of the country permits this, and the Lok Sabha also allows it. If the number were less than two-thirds, it would be considered a betrayal. The court will decide who the 'real TMC' is. Another rebel MP, Rachana Banerjee, mentioned that while they will always respect former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, there is a need to focus on their constituencies and highlighted the challenges faced during TMC's 15 years in power. Banerjee, who returned from abroad to sign the merger documents with NCPI, acknowledged that the votes were secured due to 'Didi' (Mamata Banerjee), but stressed that voters expect development.

In response to questions, she stated that they could never rebel against Mamata Banerjee and will always hold her in high regard. She praised the efficiency of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and the BJP government's operations, noting that having the same party in power at both the state and center would facilitate work. Banerjee remarked that she was there to sign documents for the merger with another party and reiterated her respect for 'Didi', acknowledging that they received votes because of her.

She added that while 'Didi' was the face of the party, she received votes to work for her constituency. She believes that having a unified government at the center and state would make governance easier, something they have not experienced in the past 15 years. When they were with 'Didi', they felt obstructed in their efforts. Now, with Suvendu Adhikari, they are witnessing rapid progress in West Bengal. They will always respect 'Didi'.
