TMC Leader Abhishek Banerjee Attacked During Visit to Post-Poll Violence Victims
Incident During Visit to Sonarpur
Abhishek Banerjee, the All India General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), faced an assault while visiting victims of post-election violence. As he entered Sonarpur on a motorcycle, protesters attacked him, delivering brutal slaps and punches to his head, neck, and face. Meanwhile, TMC MP, wearing a cricket helmet, was heading towards the home of Sanju Karmakar, a TMC worker who was killed. Protesters hurled eggs and shoes at him, even tearing the buttons off his white shirt. Despite the chaos, Banerjee continued to walk through the crowd while police attempted to manage the situation.
Accusations Against BJP
Following the incident, Banerjee claimed that the attack was orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating, 'Look at what they have done. This is their example of democracy.' He noted that it had been less than a month since the elections, and there was no sign of police presence. Before his arrival in Sonarpur, some women were seen holding eggs, while BJP workers waved black flags and chanted slogans demanding him to leave. Amidst the protests, the Diamond Harbour MP opted to ride a motorcycle instead of a car, which led to confrontations as some individuals began chasing his vehicle.
Details of the Visit
On Saturday, Banerjee's agenda included visiting the homes of those who lost their lives in the post-election violence. He traveled through Beleghata in Kolkata to reach Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas. During his visit, he also stopped at a house in Kalighat to receive a notice from the CID. However, prior to his arrival in Sonarpur, BJP leaders and supporters took to the streets with black flags, chanting slogans against him. Protests erupted from Patuli near the Dhala Bridge to Kamrabada in Sonarpur, where BJP workers gathered in large numbers.
