TMC Faces Internal Turmoil as Sukhendu Ray Resigns Amidst Political Alliance Meeting
Mamata Banerjee Confronts Challenges Following Sukhendu Ray's Resignation
On Monday, Mamata Banerjee attended a meeting of the INDIA alliance, but her troubles intensified after Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), unexpectedly resigned and left the party. In his resignation letter, Roy cited corruption within the party and claimed that the public mandate for the 2026 West Bengal elections favors the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shortly after, 11 other MPs visited Roy at his residence in Delhi, fueling speculation about his potential shift to the BJP, especially after meetings with Union Minister Bhupender Yadav and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Notably, the TMC holds 28 seats in the Lok Sabha and 13 in the Rajya Sabha.
Rebellion in Parliament Following State Assembly Unrest
This parliamentary rebellion follows unrest in the West Bengal Assembly after the party held 80 seats, where 57 MLAs supported the expelled Ritabrata Banerjee, who has been designated as the Leader of Opposition (LOP). It is significant that both in Parliament and the Assembly, dissenting leaders have expressed their discontent against Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee's nephew and the party's national general secretary. They have voiced their disappointment with the party's functioning and have blamed Abhishek for the party's decline in the state.
TMC Crisis Deepens: Over 20 MPs Write to Om Birla
According to sources, more than 20 TMC MPs have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, further intensifying speculation about internal party disagreements. Reports suggest that these MPs are contemplating forming a separate faction or even a new political group, as there are enough members to support such a move. Sources also indicate that a distinct faction of the TMC in the Lok Sabha may soon emerge, although a final decision will be made at an appropriate time.
