TMC Struggles with Rebellion After Election Defeat
In the wake of a significant defeat in the recent state elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is grappling with internal dissent after losing power in West Bengal. The party, led by Mamata Banerjee, has received a major setback following the Speaker's recognition of 58 rebel TMC legislators as the main opposition party. This development poses a new challenge to the party's urban political framework, as uncertainty looms over the future of senior leaders holding key mayoral positions.
Recognition of Rebel Legislators
Speaker Rathindra Nath Bose has acknowledged the 58 rebel TMC legislators, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, as the principal opposition group. These dissenting legislators have accused the party leadership of operating in a dictatorial manner and have openly challenged the role of TMC's national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. Amidst this turmoil, questions are being raised about the future of one of TMC's most influential urban leaders, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, whose resignation is reportedly still pending. Earlier this week, TMC legislator Kunal Ghosh announced that party supremo Mamata Banerjee had accepted Hakim's resignation request.
Resignation Uncertainty
According to Ghosh, he was initially asked not to resign at that time. However, he has since sought permission from Mamata Banerjee to resign again, to which she agreed. Despite this, reports indicate that the resignation has not yet been formally submitted to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). KMC Chairperson Mala Roy stated, 'I have not yet received Firhad Hakim's resignation. According to the rules, if the mayor wishes to resign, he must submit it to me.'
Increased Uncertainty After Administrative Meeting
Uncertainty surrounding Hakim's position has intensified following his attendance at an administrative meeting at Nabanna, chaired by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, which reportedly caused disagreements among certain factions within the TMC leadership.
