Agartala, April 17: The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), led by Pradyot Debbarma, has achieved a remarkable victory in the elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), securing 24 out of the 28 available seats.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win the remaining four seats, while both the CPI(M) and Congress were unable to gain any seats for the second consecutive election cycle.

According to Bipul Barman, an Officer on Special Duty in the State Election Commission, "The elections were conducted for 28 seats, with two members nominated by the Governor. TMP won 24 seats, and BJP took four."

In response to the overwhelming support, TMP leader Pradyot Debbarma emphasized the importance of this victory and called on party members to promote peace.

“Love has triumphed over hate. I urge the winners to serve the ‘dofa’ (community), the state, and the nation. Ordinary individuals can achieve extraordinary things. I appeal to everyone to ensure that there is no violence in our small state for the sake of our ‘dofa’ and future generations,” Debbarma shared on social media.

Senior BJP figure and state minister Ratan Lal Nath acknowledged the party's loss, linking it to voter sentiments influenced by emotional issues.

“I had mentioned that the BJP's chances were slim if voters were swayed by emotional matters. The BJP remains the choice for those prioritizing development,” he stated.

Despite their alliance in the state government, the BJP and TMP chose to contest the TTAADC elections separately.

The council oversees nearly 70% of Tripura's land area and caters to a population of approximately 1.5 million, making it a crucial political entity.

The elections, held on April 12, saw a voter turnout of 83.50%, exceeding the 81% turnout recorded in 2021, with 173 candidates competing.

In the previous TTAADC elections of 2021, TMP had won 18 seats with a 46.70% vote share, while the BJP secured nine seats with 29.30% of the votes.

This second consecutive victory for the Tipra Motha Party, established in 2020 by former royal scion Pradyot Debbarma with aspirations for ‘Greater Tipraland’, highlights its sustained influence among the tribal communities of Tripura.

With this decisive win, TMP has solidified its role as the leading political force in the TTAADC, shaping the political dynamics of the region as future elections approach.
