Progress on Land Pattas for Tea Workers

Doomdooma, Dec 6: The Tinsukia district authorities are intensifying efforts to distribute land pattas to tea garden employees, following the recent passage of the Assam Fixation of Ceiling on Land Holding (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The district administration has instructed all tea estates to quickly provide updated information regarding their workers' land holdings to facilitate the new law's implementation.

This directive was issued during a review meeting at the district commissioner's conference hall, led by Deputy Commissioner Swapneel Paul. The meeting included Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Sanghamitra Barua, Assistant Labour Commissioner Bhaskar Mili, revenue circle officers, and representatives from tea estates.

During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner assessed the progress of patta distribution and urged garden managements to compile comprehensive records of their workers, detailing the land each worker occupies.

Revenue officers and circle officers were also assigned the task of conducting independent checks to verify the accuracy and legitimacy of the submitted data.

This preparatory initiative is vital for the execution of the amended land ceiling law, which aims to grant long-awaited land rights to tea estate workers living in labor lines.

According to the new legislation, eligible workers will be awarded pattas for the land they occupy, providing them with long-term housing security and addressing a significant socio-economic need within Assam’s tea community.
