Three Leaders Remain in Kerala Chief Minister Race Amidst Political Turmoil
Political Dynamics in Kerala's Chief Minister Race
The race for the Chief Minister position in Kerala has narrowed down to three prominent leaders. Following a significant meeting involving several party officials from Rahul Gandhi's party, the prospects for K.C. Venugopal have notably strengthened. Gandhi convened with key Kerala Congress figures at Sonia Gandhi's residence on Janpath, which included former state unit heads, executive chairpersons, and other influential leaders.
Attendees of this crucial meeting included former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president M.M. Hassan, K. Sudhakaran, and Muraleedharan, along with Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, head of the Kerala Congress Disciplinary Committee, and executive chairpersons Shafi Parambil, A.P. Anil Kumar, and P.C. Vishwanath.
According to reports, seven out of the five former presidents of the Kerala Congress and three KPCC executive chairpersons have endorsed Venugopal as the next Chief Minister. Another contender, V.D. Satheesan, has garnered support from two leaders, while one has opted to remain neutral. Senior party figure Ramesh Chennithala appears to be falling out of the race due to a lack of backing.
The delay in selecting a Chief Minister has sparked intense political activity within the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala, with supporters of the top three candidates expressing their preferences through protests, posters, and rallies in the capital.
During the meeting, Rahul Gandhi reportedly expressed concerns regarding the ongoing power displays and roadshows by rival factions within the Kerala Congress. Following the discussions, former KPCC president K. Muraleedharan indicated that an announcement regarding the candidate would likely be made by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. He informed reporters that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to return from Bengaluru this evening, after which further discussions will take place, including talks with Sonia Gandhi. A decision is anticipated either tonight or by tomorrow morning.
Uncertainty continues to loom over the party's central leadership, as observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik have been meeting with Congress legislators to gather their opinions. Subsequently, the leadership has also engaged in discussions with the three main contenders and KPCC president Suni Joseph. The UDF, led by Congress, made a historic comeback by winning 102 out of 140 assembly seats after a decade, while the Left Democratic Front secured only 35 seats.
