Exploring the Depths of Creative Expression

In her insightful book 'BIG MAGIC', Elizabeth Gilbert suggests that the universe hides unique treasures within each of us, waiting to be discovered. The quest to reveal these treasures embodies the essence of creative living, and for me, theatre serves as a profound excavation of these hidden gems.

This process is a careful and intentional exploration of what lies beneath our conscious awareness. Theatre possesses the remarkable ability to awaken these dormant aspects, provided it is treated with the respect it deserves, transcending mere entertainment. Ironically, theatre often does not receive the recognition it merits, as it is frequently dismissed as mere 'play', as if playfulness were insignificant.

Consider the fact that storytelling and drama are among the oldest and most enduring practices in human history. We have yet to reach a point where the desire to tell and hear stories becomes obsolete. Art, whether acknowledged or not, is vital not only for survival but for a fulfilling life. Survival is rooted in fear, and nothing of lasting value has ever emerged from fear.

Theatre, along with all forms of art, champions freedom—not the fragile freedom of entitlement, but a more expansive and democratic form. This freedom stands against war, genocide, and anything that diminishes life. It invites us to be present and engaged.

Theatre is a fusion of music, movement, poetry, silence, and imagery, all merging into a singular act of creation.

Theatre promotes visibility, and the truth is that humans flourish when they feel acknowledged. The stage exists to challenge perspectives, push boundaries, and provide solace in an otherwise chaotic world. It offers a chance for harmony, showcasing its vast potential.

The Transformative Power of Theatre: A Journey into Creative Living

From grand Broadway stages to intimate black-box theatres, from university settings to unpaved village streets, or even beneath the shade of a tree that has witnessed both beauty and brutality over generations—any space can become a stage if one knows how to utilize it. Theatre serves as a reminder of the power of connection, which is a fundamental human desire.

In today's world, where the whims of AI run rampant and distinguishing authenticity from imitation becomes increasingly challenging, I remain confident that theatre will persist. Humanity is inherently wired for real-time connections.

No machine can replicate the electric energy of shared breath, silence, and presence. Theatre has endured disruptions, evolving and urging us to grow alongside it.

This resilience illustrates that the role of theatre and the performing arts extends far beyond mere entertainment; it is a discipline and a pursuit.

Theatre encourages us to keep our minds flexible and our capacity for learning and unlearning active. It softens our sense of self and serves as a remedy for a world often rife with violence, intolerance, and destruction.

It compels us to step outside ourselves and become vessels for something greater. Spending countless hours in rehearsal, collaborating with diverse minds towards a common vision, transforms us. It strips away our identities tied to gender, caste, creed, race, and religion, teaching us coexistence, surrender, and, most importantly, empathy.

This is the community-building power that theatre fosters, and it has always come with consequences. Art has historically stood in close proximity to truth, resisting attempts to undermine human consciousness and challenging oppressive systems.

Theatre also invites us to honor our inner child, allowing us to reconnect with the joy of playfulness—a quality many of us have lost over time. The world feels fragmented because so many have had their playfulness stripped away, often too soon and too abruptly.

On this occasion, I want to remind everyone that it is never too late to reclaim the joy and innocence of childhood. One is never too old to play. Ideally, I wish for everyone to experience the privilege and magic of being on stage. It will reassure you that it's acceptable to be uncertain, to make mistakes, to stumble, and to understand that repetition is a fundamental aspect of existence, leading to wonder. The stage and theatre will embrace you with all your quirks and imperfections, loosening the grip of ego and rigidity.

In conclusion, I express my heartfelt gratitude to the teachers, mentors, space keepers, and fellow practitioners who continue to nurture this delicate yet powerful art form. In a world fixated on scale and certainty, it requires profound love and respect to dedicate oneself to a craft that does not always promise immediate rewards.

Long live theatre. Long live the arts.
