According to reports, the truth about Ricky's situation came to light in 2006 when a group of workers on a remote cattle farm stumbled upon a severely malnourished man wandering alone in the desert. This man was Ricky, who had vanished without a trace approximately ten weeks earlier while traveling from Brisbane to Port Hedland for a new job.
Ricky was known for his adventurous spirit and viewed his journey to Port Hedland as a fresh start. However, he had to navigate through 3,000 kilometers of treacherous outback, one of Australia's most isolated areas. With his reliable Mitsubishi Challenger, he set off on what was supposed to be a two to three-day trip, but he never anticipated the ordeal that awaited him.
A Puzzling Enigma
Initially, Ricky claimed that his vehicle had broken down. Later, he recounted to journalists that he had picked up an Indigenous hitchhiker who had drugged him, causing him to lose consciousness. In 2010, Ricky collaborated with writer and director Greg McLean to recount his harrowing experience, which was reminiscent of McLean's horror film 'Wolf Creek' featuring a serial killer in the same outback.
In his memoir, Ricky described the harshness of the terrain, stating, 'It was a challenging and desolate area for a man alone on bare feet. Yet, I began to walk, thinking that the more distance I covered, the less distance searchers would have to travel to find me. To survive, I consumed snakes, ants, lizards, frogs, and crickets. I drank from small waterholes and even resorted to drinking my urine or collecting morning dew when thirsty.'
At one point, he speculated that he might have been given a drugged drink or injected with a sedative. When he regained consciousness, he found himself in a tent where he was provided water. His journey back from the brink of death involved walking for ten days in temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, during which he frequently fainted from the heat.
