Understanding the Death of Lord Krishna

Lord Krishna is revered as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. While many are aware of his divine role, few ponder the circumstances surrounding his death.

Let's explore the timeline and events leading to the demise of Lord Krishna. The tale of Krishna's incarnation is well-known, as he appeared during the Dvapara Yuga. However, not everyone realizes that his death was a consequence of a singular deception from his previous incarnation as Lord Rama. According to ancient texts, Krishna's death was linked to the defeat of the Kauravas in the Mahabharata war. After eighteen days of battle, when Yudhishthira was being crowned, Gandhari, mourning her sons' deaths, cursed Krishna, blaming him for the war, stating that just as her lineage was destroyed, so too would his be.

The Destruction of the Yadavas

The Mahabharata's Mausala Parva narrates the events leading to Krishna's departure from his earthly form. This account reveals that Krishna's death occurred thirty-five years after the Mahabharata war. The effects of Gandhari's curse began to manifest in Dwarka. Sensing the impending doom, Krishna gathered the Yadavas and moved to the Prabhasa region. There, he offered food to the Brahmins and instructed the Yadavas to prepare for their end.

Not long after, a conflict erupted between Satyaki and Kritavarma while discussing the war. In a fit of rage, Satyaki killed Kritavarma, igniting a fierce battle among the Yadavas, leading to the demise of Krishna's son Pradyumna and many others, leaving only Babhru and Daruka alive.

The Departure of Balarama

Following the Yadavas' destruction, Krishna's elder brother Balarama sat by the seashore, meditating and ultimately merging with the divine. After Balarama's departure, Krishna lay in a meditative pose beneath a peepal tree when a hunter named Jara approached, mistaking Krishna's foot for a deer. Without hesitation, he shot an arrow that struck Krishna's foot. Upon realizing his mistake, Jara was filled with remorse and sought forgiveness. Krishna reassured him, stating that this was merely the result of his past actions.

The Tale of Past Lives

Krishna revealed to Jara that in his previous life, he was King Bali, whom he had hidden from in the guise of a tree. Thus, he chose the manner of his death in this life similarly. Krishna assured Jara that he had fulfilled his purpose. After Jara departed, Krishna's charioteer Daruka arrived. Krishna instructed him to return to Dwarka and inform everyone of the Yadavas' annihilation and that both he and Balarama had returned to their divine abode. He advised them to leave Dwarka, as it was destined to be submerged. Following this, deities and celestial beings gathered to worship Krishna, after which he closed his eyes and returned to his heavenly realm.
