The Heavy Metal Legend: Remembering Ozzy Osbourne After His Passing at 76
Ozzy Osbourne: A Heavy Metal Icon Passes Away
Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic lead singer of Black Sabbath and a pivotal figure in heavy metal music, has passed away at the age of 76. His family confirmed the news on Tuesday, stating, "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family’s privacy at this time."
Following the announcement, his bandmates from Black Sabbath expressed their grief and shared heartfelt tributes. Bassist Geezer Butler reflected on their reunion for a farewell concert on July 5, expressing gratitude for their shared experiences. He wrote on Instagram, "Thanks for all those years – we had some great fun. Four kids from Aston – who’d have thought, eh? So glad we got to do it one last time, back in Aston. Love you."
Guitarist Tony Iommi described Osbourne as a "dear, dear friend" and shared his sorrow, stating, "It’s just such heartbreaking news that I can’t really find the words. There won’t ever be another like him. Geezer, Bill and myself have lost our brother."
Drummer Bill Ward also paid tribute, sharing a photo with Osbourne and writing, "Where will I find you now? In the memories, our unspoken embraces, our missed phone calls … no, you’re forever in my heart."
The music community has been flooded with tributes from various artists, including Elton John, Robert Plant, Ronnie Wood, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Metallica, Pantera, and Anthrax.
Black Sabbath, formed in 1968 and named after a horror film featuring Boris Karloff, released their debut album in 1970 and became one of the most significant heavy metal bands, selling over 75 million records. Osbourne recorded eight albums with the band before his departure in 1979 due to substance abuse issues.
He made a comeback with the group for their 2013 album '13', which achieved chart-topping success in both the UK and US. Although they performed what was believed to be their final concert in 2017, a surprise reunion took place on July 5, 2025, in Birmingham, where Osbourne performed while seated on a throne due to health challenges.
During the concert, he shared with the audience, "I’ve been laid up for six years, and you’ve got no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
