The Heartbreaking Story of Saudi Arabia's 'Sleeping Prince' Comes to an End
Tragic Passing of Prince Al-Waleed
In a sorrowful announcement, Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, affectionately referred to as Saudi Arabia's 'Sleeping Prince,' has died at the age of 36 after nearly two decades in a coma. His family confirmed the news over the weekend, marking a poignant conclusion to a deeply emotional chapter in the kingdom's royal history.
His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, expressed his grief on social media, stating, "With hearts full of faith in Allah's decree and destiny, and with profound sadness, we mourn our beloved son Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away to Allah's mercy today."
Funeral prayers are set to take place on Sunday following the Asr prayer at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, as announced by the family.
Prince Al-Waleed fell into a coma in 2005 at the tender age of 15 due to a tragic car accident in London, which resulted in a severe brain hemorrhage. He was subsequently transported back to Saudi Arabia and admitted to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.
Despite receiving extensive medical care, including treatments from specialists in both the United States and Spain, he never regained full consciousness. For almost 20 years, he remained in a vegetative state, dependent on life support and a ventilator.
Prince Khaled bin Talal consistently supported his decision to keep his son alive, dismissing any proposals to withdraw life support. His steadfast presence at his son's side year after year resonated deeply with people across the nation and beyond.
Born in April 1990, Prince Al-Waleed was the firstborn of Prince Khaled bin Talal, a prominent figure in the Saudi royal family. His prolonged medical struggle garnered national attention, symbolizing parental love and hope against overwhelming odds.
