The Village of Kodinhi

Located in the Malappuram district of Kerala, the village of Kodinhi stands out for its remarkable characteristic. While it may appear like any other village, its reputation has spread far and wide, even beyond India.

The distinguishing feature of Kodinhi is that it has a significantly high number of twins and identical twins being born. It may sound unbelievable, but this fact is entirely true. Most families in this village have twins, making it a unique place.

A Community of Twins

Currently, Kodinhi is home to around 2,000 families, and astonishingly, there are about 400 pairs of twins living there. This trend has been ongoing for several decades, leading to the village being dubbed the 'Twin Village.' Interestingly, even newcomers to the village tend to have twins.

Among the residents is 46-year-old Shamsad Begum, who moved to Kodinhi with her husband in 2000. When she had children, they too were twins. Shamsad mentions that in her family’s five generations, no woman had ever given birth to twins before.

Challenges and Blessings

For some, having twins is a blessing, while for others, it can be a burden. Auto-rickshaw driver Abhilash shared that he has two sets of twins, making it challenging for him to manage the responsibilities of raising four children.

The phenomenon of twins in this village has attracted the attention of scientists, who are conducting research to understand the underlying reasons. Samples ranging from hair to saliva have been collected for analysis.

Scientific Insights

Researchers from Kerala and even London are investigating why twins are so prevalent in Kodinhi. Although the exact cause remains unclear, genetic factors have been suggested as a possible explanation.

Professor E. Preetam from the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies indicated that genetic reasons could be responsible for this unique occurrence.
