Tesla's Launch Plans in India

New Delhi: Elon Musk's satellite internet service, Starlink, is gearing up to launch in India, while his electric vehicle company, Tesla, is also preparing to commence operations in the country this month.

Although Tesla is not yet manufacturing vehicles locally, it plans to unveil its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15.

This facility, referred to as an 'experience centre', will occupy a 4,000 square foot space located near Apple's flagship store in the city.

This initiative is part of Tesla's larger strategy to expand its presence in India. In June, the company secured a commercial space in Kurla West, Mumbai, intended for vehicle servicing.

Currently, Tesla holds four commercial properties in India, which include an engineering hub in Pune, a registered office in Bengaluru, and a temporary office near BKC.

Tesla India Motor and Energy Private Ltd has leased a 24,500-square-foot area in Kurla West for a service centre, conveniently located near the upcoming showroom.

This development signifies a crucial advancement in Tesla's ambitions to penetrate the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, even though the company has no immediate plans for local vehicle production.

As per real estate documents obtained from CRE Matrix, a property analytics firm, Tesla has entered into a lease agreement with Bellissimo in City FC Mumbai I Private for the space in Lodha Logistics Park.

The lease spans five years, starting at a monthly rent of Rs 37.53 lakh, totaling nearly Rs 25 crore over the lease term, which includes a security deposit of Rs 2.25 crore.

Tesla has reiterated that its focus is solely on selling vehicles in India, not on manufacturing them at this time.

Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy confirmed last month that Tesla is not pursuing manufacturing in India, emphasizing that the company aims to establish showrooms for sales purposes only.

The Indian government has introduced guidelines for its progressive EV scheme to attract new investments from global manufacturers in the electric vehicle sector and to position India as a global hub for e-vehicle manufacturing.
