Internal Conflicts Emerge in Ruling Coalition

The ruling coalition is experiencing visible fractures as Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis engage in a public spat. This conflict has intensified with accusations flying between the two leaders regarding governance failures, free schemes, and allegations of corruption ahead of the crucial BMC and municipal elections. The latest controversy erupted during the election campaign for the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), where Pawar responded to Fadnavis's comments by emphasizing that he was merely highlighting the government's shortcomings rather than launching personal attacks.

Pawar's Critique of Governance

During a press conference following the unveiling of a joint manifesto with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar stated that the criticism of the government has become sharper due to the upcoming municipal elections after nearly nine years. He clarified that he was not criticizing the BJP but was focused on exposing the mistakes made in PCMC. He pointed out that identifying errors is not the same as criticism. Just a day prior, Fadnavis had indirectly targeted Pawar at a rally, suggesting that some leaders only become vocal as elections approach.

Allegations of Corruption

Ajit Pawar accused the BJP of corruption and mismanagement during their tenure from 2017 to 2022 in PCMC, claiming that none of the 27 promises made by the party were fulfilled. He demanded an investigation into alleged irregularities in slum rehabilitation authority (SRA) projects in areas like Ravet and Bhosari, questioning who benefited from the transferable development rights granted under these schemes.

Election Promises and Infrastructure Issues

He also highlighted the rising costs of infrastructure projects, citing an example where the cost of a bridge project escalated from ₹70 lakh to ₹7 crore. While unveiling the coalition's electoral agenda, Pawar made several commitments, including property tax exemptions for homes up to 500 square feet starting April 1, 2026, cancellation of the draft development plan, daily water supply, and free bus and metro travel. Other promises included improved roads, pollution control, modern healthcare facilities, ideal schools, free tablets for students, and interest-free loans up to ₹5 lakh for women completing skill training.
