Current Situation in the Strait of Hormuz

Following Iran's increased military presence in the Strait of Hormuz, the situation has become quite tense. Amidst these developments, an Indian-flagged oil tanker named 'Desh Garima' has successfully passed through this critical maritime route. However, not all vessels have had a smooth journey. Reports from TankerTrackers.com and the UK Maritime Trade Operations indicate that boats from Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps fired shots near Oman. As a result, several ships, including Vaibhav, Desh Vibhor, Sanmar Herald, and Jag Arnav, were forced to alter their courses or turn back.

India's Strong Response

In light of this incident, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Iranian ambassador stationed in India. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed deep concern regarding the gunfire directed at Indian vessels. Fortunately, all tankers and their crews are reported safe, but India has made it clear that it will not compromise on the safety of its commercial ships.

The Ministry emphasized that India has always prioritized the safety of sailors and commercial vessels. It reminded Iran of its historical cooperation in ensuring safe passage for Indian ships. The Foreign Secretary urged the Iranian ambassador to communicate India's concerns to Tehran and to take appropriate measures to restore safe and normal passage for Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian ambassador assured that these concerns would be conveyed to their government.

Status of Ships in the Persian Gulf

According to data, 'Desh Garima' was the tenth Indian ship to navigate this route since the beginning of March. Currently, there are 14 Indian-flagged vessels present in the Persian Gulf.
