Tensions Rise in Old Delhi as Police Detain Protesters During Mosque Demolition
Incident Overview
New Delhi: Following a stone-pelting incident during a demolition operation near a mosque in Old Delhi, authorities have detained ten individuals, as confirmed by police officials on Wednesday.
The unrest unfolded near the Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque located in the Turkman Gate area, adjacent to Ramlila Ground, where a late-night anti-encroachment drive was initiated.
Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) representatives stated that the operation aimed to remove unauthorized structures from the land surrounding the mosque, adhering to directives from the Delhi High Court issued on November 12, 2025.
The demolition commenced early Wednesday morning, supported by a significant presence of civic staff and law enforcement. Reports indicate that between 10 to 17 bulldozers were utilized during the operation.
As the demolition progressed, a large crowd of residents gathered outside the mosque, voicing their opposition and protesting against the actions taken.
Tensions escalated when some protesters attempted to breach police barricades, leading to stone-throwing at security forces. In response, police deployed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and mitigate the situation.
The FIR has been registered under various sections, including rioting, assault on a government official, and hindrance to a public servant's duties.
Authorities have identified and detained ten individuals, with ongoing efforts to locate additional suspects.
More information is expected to follow.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Delhi High Court had issued a notice regarding a petition from the managing committee of Masjid Syed Elahi, contesting the MCD's decision to remove what they described as alleged encroachments from the land adjacent to the mosque and a nearby graveyard at Ramlila Maidan.
However, civic officials maintained that their actions were in accordance with court orders concerning unauthorized constructions.
